Au cours de leur biosédimentogenèse et de leur diagenèse, les sédiments et les roches calcaires peuvent se trouver dans trois états différents : un état d'«agradation cristalline», un état d'«équilibre géochimique» et un état de «dégradation cristalline». [...] Pendant les «phases d'équilibre géochimique», les composants du sédiment ou de la roche se rapprochent les uns des autres sous «l'effet de la compaction et des contraintes mécaniques et thermiques».

OBS

Si les grains sont en «équilibre géochimique» avec leur milieu extérieur (fluides de transport et du milieu dépôt, organismes fixés sur les grains, etc.), «leurs structures originelles ne subissent aucune modification».
