[...] La technologie consiste à focaliser des impulsions laser d'une durée de quelques nanosecondes sur une région d'une fraction de mm2 à la surface du matériau visé. Cela produit une étincelle, ou microplasma, d'une durée de quelques microsecondes dont l'émission spectrale, surtout dans le visible et l'ultraviolet, est analysée par un spectromètre optique. Ce spectre contient les raies d'émission caractéristiques des atomes présents dans le plasma.
