Biological Exposure Indices (BEIs) represent warning levels of biological response to the chemical, or warning levels of the chemical or its metabolic product(s) in tissues, fluids, or exhaled air of exposed workers, regardless of whether the chemical was inhaled, ingested, or absorbed via skin. ... BEIs are a measure of the amount of chemical absorbed into the body. ... Recommended values of BEIs are based on data obtained in epidemiological and field studies or determined as bioequivalent to a TLV by means of pharmacokinetic analysis of data from controlled human studies.
