"Mating Flight". ... After she has killed her rivals, the young queen flies from the hive. She may mate with one or sometimes several drones on her first flight or on a later flight. The young queen returns to the hive after she has mated, and begins to lay eggs two days later.

Quelque temps après [son éclosion], la reine quitte la ruche, accompagnée par les faux bourdons; c'est le vol nuptial, après lequel elle ne sortira plus de la ruche, du moins jusqu'au prochain essaimage. On a longtemps cru qu'au cours de ce vol un seul mâle fécondait la reine. On sait maintenant que celle-ci subit plusieurs fécondations : les spermatozoïdes sont conservés dans un réceptacle de son appareil génital, la spermathèque.
