A continent (area 5,000,000 square miles) with a coastline of about 14,000 miles, largely within the Antarctic Circle. There are no permanent inhabitants. Political sovereignty is disputed. The continent, surrounded by pack ice and icebergs, is an ice-covered plateau (6,000-10,000 feet) with mountain peaks rising to 15,000 feet, some of them volcanic.
