English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
  • Aromatic Hydrocarbons
DEF

A hydrocarbon which is characterized by the presence of a benzene ring.

CONT

Another class of hydrocarbons of great industrial ... interest is related to benzene ..., a liquid obtained in the destructive distillation of coal. These are termed the aromatic hydrocarbons.

OBS

aromatic: pertaining to or designating a compound with one or more planar conjugated rings of the form typified by the benzene molecule; ...

OBS

"Aromatic," as a noun, is more often used in the plural form to designate the group of compounds; it might be ambiguous if used alone.

Key term(s)
  • aromatics
  • aromatic hydrocarbons
  • arenes

French

Domaine(s)
  • Éléments et composés chimiques
  • Hydrocarbures aromatiques
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aromatic Hydrocarbons
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
DEF

Of, relating to, or characterized by the presence of at least one benzene ring - used of a large class of monocyclic, bicyclic, and polycyclic hydrocarbons and their derivatives (as benzene, toluene ...).

OBS

Distinguished from alicyclic, aliphatic, heterocyclic.

OBS

The term aromatic refers to the strong odor characteristic of most substances of this nature used in perfumery and in the fragrance industry to describe essential oils; "aromatic" used in this sense differs from "aromatic" in the chemical sense.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrocarbures aromatiques
  • Éléments et composés chimiques
DEF

Record 4 2003-11-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aromatic Hydrocarbons
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
DEF

An organic compound of the aromatic class.

DEF

Any of a large class of organic compounds including benzene and compounds that resemble benzene in chemical properties.

CONT

Aromatic compounds contain unusually stable ring structures, often made up of six carbon atoms arranged hexagonally. Some of the compounds, however, have rings with more or fewer atoms, not necessarily all carbon. Furan, for example, has a ring with four atoms of carbon and one of oxygen. Also, two or more rings can be fused, as in naphthalene. The characteristic properties of the class, notably the stability of the compounds, derive from the fact that aromatic rings permit the sharing of some electrons by all the atoms of the ring, which increases the strength of the bonds.

OBS

"Aromatic," as a noun, is often used in the plural form to designate the group of compounds.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrocarbures aromatiques

DEF

CONT
