DEF

A system of controls for aircraft brakes that relieves hydraulic pressure at wheels that are about to skid or lock-up.

CONT

The anti-skid system limits the braking on each main wheel independently to allow maximum braking efficiency under all runway conditions. Basically, as a wheel almost stops rotating and is about to skid, the system detects this and reduces the braking pressure to that wheel, thus avoiding a skid.

CONT

The anti-skid system consists of two dual servo control valves, a wheel speed transducer in each main wheel, an anti-skid control box, four indicator lights and a control switch.

OBS

The anti-skid system is the airplane version of ... the anti-lock braking system (ABS) in cars.

OBS

anti-skid unit: term standardized by ISO.

CONT

B.E.T. method: Gaseous absorption analysis method. Acronym of "S. Brunauer, P. Emmett, E. Teller." Widely used for surface area determinations by computing the monolayer area.

OBS

The BET method is widely used in surface science for the calculation of surface areas of solids by physical adsorption of gas molecules.

OBS

Surface Area Measurement. For nanopowder, the B.E.T. method is commonly used to determine the specific surface area. The drop in nitrogen pressure in a closed container due to adsorption of the nitrogen molecules to the surface of the material inserted in the container is measured. (The shape of the nanopowder particles is assumed to be spherical.)

OBS

... There, he [Paul Emmett] sought out a better understanding of the mechanisms by which ammonia could be taken out of the air and turned into a fertilizer for plants. Emmett knew that the Germans had developed just such a mechanism during World War I, but scientists did not entirely understand how and why the process worked. The result of this investigation was the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) Method, which remains the second-most cited scientific paper on the process and a technique still in use worldwide. The BET Method provides scientists with the ability to measure a variety of properties of gas molecules on a solid surface: the surface area, the composition of the surface, and the amount of catalyst that is both on the surface and in the interior of the solid. Dr. Emmett’s work on the BET Method earned him a Nobel Prize nomination.

The clear and present danger test features two independent conditions: first, the speech must impose a threat that a substantive evil might follow, and second, the threat is a real, imminent threat. The court had to identify and quantify both the nature of the threatened evil and the imminence of the perceived danger.

Strong wind, producing a duststorm or sandstorm, in central and northern Sudan.

CONT

The name comes from the Arabic word habb, meaning wind. Haboobs are most frequent from May through September, especially in June, but they have occurred in every month except November. Their average duration is three hours; they are most severe in April and May when the soil is driest. They may approach from any direction, but most commonly from the north in winter and from the south, southeast, or east in summer. The average maximum wind velocity is over 13 m s1 (30 mph) and a speed of 28 m s1 (62 mph) has been recorded. The sand and dust form a dense whirling wall that may be 1000 m (3000 ft) high; it is often preceded by isolated dust whirls. During these storms, enormous quantities of sand are deposited. Haboobs usually occur after a few days of rising temperature and falling pressure.
