Territories that entered the Canadian Confederation in 1870 when the British government transferred the control of the "North-Western Territory" to Canada. At the time, the renamed "Northwest Territories" were covering all Northern Canada not already part of the Confederation, from the 49th parallel to the Baffin Island, linking Eastern Canada to British Columbia that became a Canadian province in 1871; in 1880, the area covered went further north when the British government transferred ownership of the islands of the Arctic Archipelago to Canada. Portions of the then Northwest Territories would become, between 1874 and 1999, part of Labrador, Northern and Western Quebec, Northern Ontario, Northern Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon and Nunavut. Until 1999, the Northwest Territories used to stand twelfth in the order of precedence established according to the year of entry into Confederation of the ten provinces, then of the territories, listed, by convention, after the Yukon even if the latter entered Confederation 28 years after them. They now stand eleventh, before the Yukon and Nunavut. 4, record 4, English, - Northwest%20Territories
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The name of a territory and its form, spelling and abbreviation are to be decided by the territorial toponymy authority, with the agreement of the Government of Canada. One uses "Northwest Territories" for the geographical entity and the provincial administration, the name never being stated in a shorter form, and "N.W.T." as the abbreviation. Note the absence of hyphenation and the abbreviation without a space between the three elements of the name abbreviated by their initial letter with a period, as the rule requires in English. 4, record 4, English, - Northwest%20Territories

Approved by ISO, the Canada Post two-character symbol is NT (or CA-NT). This symbol is the same in all languages and must be used only in postal addresses and statistical charts where the identification of provinces and territories is restricted to two characters. A two-character territorial symbol must not be used instead of the abbreviation in a text or on a geographical map, a poster or a road sign. 4, record 4, English, - Northwest%20Territories

1, record 8, French, - aller%2Dretour
