About this glossary

The Underwater Archaeology Glossary was developed in partnership with Parks Canada's Underwater Archaeology Team. It deals with the terminology related to the discovery of the shipwrecks from Sir John Franklin's 1845 expedition, namely Her Majesty’s Ships (HMS) Erebus and Terror.

The glossary, originally published in 2017, has been updated to be used for the translation of achaeological study reports. It now contains 535 concepts relating to marine environment, material culture, navigation and remote sensing, sailing ships, underwater archaeology and the military functions and ranks of the United Kingdom's Royal Navy.

Update: August 2022
