14.10 Gratuitous modifiers

Certain modifiers reinforce racial and ethnic stereotypes by giving information that suggests an exception to the rule. Avoid them:


  • The board interviewed a number of intelligent Black students.


  • . . . a number of Black students.


  • . . . a number of intelligent students.
