A trilingual parliamentary glossary

Doris Tautu
(Language Update, Volume 8, Number 3, 2011, page 24)

The revitalization and preservation of the Inuit language in Nunavut has been a hot topic for a number of years. With the Inuit Language Protection Act in place since 2008, the Inuit Uqausinginnik Taiguusiliuqtiit (Inuit Language Authority) will establish and standardize the Inuit language to increase effective communications. To assist with the revitalization, preservation and standardization, the Translation Bureau has produced the Parliamentary Glossary with Inuktitut equivalents to help Inuktitut speakers gain further knowledge about the parliamentary system and to help advance the Inuktitut language. The Glossary will be a valuable resource for the average Inuk, as well as for Inuktitut interpreters and translators.

The Parliamentary Glossary is available in HTML and PDF at Parliamentary Glossary of Translation Bureau Web site (http://www.btb.gc.ca/btb.php?lang=eng&cont=1695). The glossary contains 509 English terms with French and Inuktitut equivalents. The terms were taken from the Glossary of Parliamentary Procedure produced by the Procedural Services of the House of Commons. Also included is a list of 42 House of Commons and Senate committees with newly coined Inuktitut equivalents.

This glossary is the result of consultation work done by Papatsi Kublu-Hill, Doris Tautu, Yolande Bernard and Iliana Auverana from the Terminology Standardization Directorate of the Translation Bureau.
