NOTE: Interestingly, the adverb uniquement can often be translated into English by an unlikely equivalent such as completely, entirely, fully, totally or wholly with no loss in meaning:

  • s’en remettre uniquement aux provinces pour en venir à une entente sur le commerce interprovincial - rely completely (entirely) on the provinces to come to an agreement on interprovincial trade
  • le régime est financé uniquement par les cotisations des employeurs et des employés - the plan is entirely (fully) funded by contributions from employers and employees
  • ces organismes à but non lucratif sont largement, mais pas uniquement, financés par le gouvernement - these non-profit agencies are largely but not totally financed by the government
  • la ville dépend presque uniquement de l’industrie forestière - the city is almost wholly (completely, entirely) dependent on the forest industry
