true and authentic, authentic

Redundancies are words that unnecessarily repeat information. Because both true and authentic mean “genuine” or “real,” the expression true and authentic is redundant; write either true or authentic.

  • Redundant: The novelist kept the dialogue true and authentic to the era she was writing about.
  • Recommended: The novelist kept the dialogue true (or authentic) to the era she was writing about.
