Important notice

Good news! We have updated our writing tools. Writing Tips and The Canadian Style have been combined to create a new tool called Writing Tips Plus.

Don’t forget to update your bookmarks. Within a few weeks, Writing Tips will no longer be available.

To begin your search, go to the alphabetical index below and click on the first letter of the word you are searching for.

anniversary, birthday

Capitalize the words anniversary and birthday when they appear in the title of a card, scroll, banner or poster:

  • Happy 85th Birthday
  • For Your 50th Wedding Anniversary
  • Congratulations on Your 100th Birthday
  • 50th Wedding Anniversary of Jean and Jeanne

Do not capitalize the words anniversary and birthday in general writing, as in a letter or message:

  • Congratulations on your 85th birthday!
  • All the best on your 50th wedding anniversary!
