eminent, imminent

The adjective eminent means “prominent” or “notable.”

  • In the opinion of the eminent Professor Brown, more research is needed before the medication can be made available.

Imminent means “near” or “about to happen,” and generally refers to negative events.

  • According to many scientists, a dramatic change in the Earth’s climate is imminent.
