facsimile, fax

A facsimile is an exact copy of another object, and a fax is a message transmitted electronically by a fax machine (originally facsimile machine) and received in nearly the original form. Fax is also used as a verb.

  • The British crown jewels are kept in secure storage; the ones tourists see are only facsimiles.
  • Ten faxes came in while you were out of the office.
  • John faxed me the map to his cottage.
