subject to, subjected to

Subject to, an expression widely used in administrative writing, is an adjectival or adverbial phrase meaning “under the control of, bound by, likely to have, depending on”:

  • The new policy is subject to approval by the Deputy Minister.

Subjected to is the past tense or past participle of the verb to subject to, which means “to cause to undergo something, to bring under the control of”:

  • The conquered territories were subjected to martial law.
