sink down, sink

Redundancies are words that unnecessarily repeat information. Because sink means to move downward, the modifier down in the familiar expression sink down is redundant.

  • The fishing trawler sank (not sank down) to the bottom of the ocean.
  • Overcome with relief after the verdict, the defendant sank (not sank down) to his knees.
