Important notice

Good news! We have updated our writing tools. Writing Tips and The Canadian Style have been combined to create a new tool called Writing Tips Plus.

Don’t forget to update your bookmarks. Within a few weeks, Writing Tips will no longer be available.

To begin your search, go to the alphabetical index below and click on the first letter of the word you are searching for.

versus, v., vs.

Versus, meaning “against, opposed to” or “in contrast to,” is often abbreviated to vs. in sports coverage and to v. in legal documents. Versus and its abbreviations are not italicized.

  • Headline: Canada vs. Belarus in Hockey Final
  • Judge Whitcombe will hear Weiner v. The Queen next week.

Avoid abbreviating versus in day-to-day writing.

  • The coach studied the runners’ speed versus (not vs.) their endurance.
