x-axis, y-axis

On a chart or graph, the horizontal line is the x‑axis, and the vertical one is the y‑axis. Both terms have a hyphen.

  • Stanley has trouble remembering which of the two axes is the x‑axis and which is the y‑axis.

The plural forms are x‑axes and y‑axes.
